In the early stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis, a full mouth debridement may be all that is needed to reverse the inflammatory effects caused by oral bacteria. When the infection is allowed to progress to greater levels, however, a non-surgical deep dental cleaning, or scaling and root planing, may not be enough to restore gum health. For moderate to advanced periodontal disease, there are different surgical options.
