A Healthy Smile for a Lifetime

Keep your gums healthy and improve your overall health.

What is Gum Disease?

Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria that live in the plaque that accumulates on your teeth. When proper brushing and flossing are neglected, the bacteria flourish, irritating and infecting the gum tissue.

If you have noticed any changes in the way your gums look or feel, schedule a periodontal disease consultation with Dr. Elly Tehrani to restore the health of your smile.

The Stages of Gum Disease

Stage One: Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. Marked by inflamed, bleeding gums, it is the result of oral neglect. Bacteria accumulate in the plaque on your teeth, irritating the gums. It is completely reversible with early treatment.

Stage Two: Periodontitis

Periodontitis is the second stage of gum disease. It occurs when plaque spreads below the gum line and bacteria produce toxins that cause damage to the structures supporting the teeth. The gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, forming periodontal pockets that accumulate even greater amounts of bacteria. Additional symptoms include bad breath and receding gums.

Stage Three: Advanced Periodontitis

Advanced periodontitis is the final stage of gum disease which, without treatment, will progress indefinitely, slowly destroying your smile. In this stage, periodontal pockets deepen, bone density is lost, and teeth become loose. Over time, tooth loss is inevitable without proper care.
